There are eight thousand people undergoing amputation each year due to peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and they are severely traumatized physically and spiritually after amputation. The 5-year mortality following amputation reaches as high as 39 to 80%. Our country is paying more medical expenses and more human expenditure in order to care amputated patients. Therefore, the use of endovascular therapy to recanalize diseased blood vessels for limb salvage is nowadays the mainstream of medicine, which could greatly reduce subsequent family and social burden. The section of interventional radiology of Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital has been doing the best to serve patients since the hospital opening. We have developed a variety of innovative medical technology and techniques to increase the success rate of vascular intervention and patency rate. The success rate of endovascular treatment on PAD is about 95%. The amputation rate is only 9 to 13%; about 90% of the patient's limbs can be retained. Our results on endovascular therpay of PAD are comparable to the literature reports from first-level medical institutions.
