The Division of Traditional Medicine at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital was established on July 1, 2015, with the primary goal of integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine to provide high-quality healthcare services. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is distinguished by its approach of syndrome differentiation and treatment, along with the flexible application of herbal properties. It is widely used in clinical treatment and health maintenance. Prescriptions are tailored to an individual’s constitution (cold, heat, deficient, or excessive) and the properties of Chinese medicinal herbs (cold, cool, warm, or hot) to ensure effective and personalized care.
Currently, the Division of Traditional Medicine offers outpatient services in Chinese internal medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, acupuncture and traumatology. In addition to outpatient care, the department collaborates closely with Western medicine specialists to provide TCM consultations for hospitalized patients. Major ongoing initiatives include the inpatient stroke rehabilitation program and the cancer treatment program, both covered by National Health Insurance. Furthermore, TCM physicians actively participate in hospital meetings, including gynecologic oncology discussions, multidisciplinary meetings for head and neck tumors, and breast cancer team conferences.
Beyond clinical services, the department strongly encourages its physicians to engage in academic writing and research, contributing studies and reports that align with the hospital’s commitment to medical research. This dedication not only enhances the field of traditional Chinese medicine but also supports its continued advancement in modern healthcare.
